Private John Kerr Stuart

John Kerr Stuart was born on 1 August 1893 at Islands of Carnmoon, Ballymoney, County Antrim, the seventh of nine children of farmer Andrew Stuart and his wife Ellen Jane (née Kerr). By the time of the 1911 Census he was living at Townparks, Enagh, County Antrim, with his parents, five of his six surviving siblings and a half-sister.

Stuart enlisted in the North Irish Horse on 2 October 1914 (No.1257). On 1 May 1915 he embarked for France with D Squadron, which at the time was serving as divisional cavalry to the 51st Division.

On 23 October 1915 Stuart transferred to the Army Service Corps (Motor Transport Section) (No. M2/153921). He remained with that regiment until the end of the war. In late November 1918 he fell ill with influenza. After a month's treatment at the 28th General Hospital, on 31 December he was evacuated to the UK.

On 25 May 1919 Stuart was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.
